  • Appearing for the promoting authority, the London Development Agency, at the inquiry into the London Development Agency (Lower Lea Valley, Olympic and Legacy) Compulsory Purchase Order - CPO to acquire land for regeneration in the Lower Lea Valley, including site to be used for the Olympics
  • Advising BT on their successful response to the European Commission's investigation on whether there has been state aid (alleged to be to the tune of several billion pounds) in the valuation for rating of BT's core network
  • NSE Inquiry - appeal for development in green belt for 200+ residential units as enabling development
  • Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints v. Gallagher - in the Court of Appeal - on the exemption of buildings occupied by religious bodies from rates

Experience

ADVISORY WORK AND MEDIATION

  • In rating, he has advised many of the country's major businesses on valuation and other matters. His list of recent clients includes Harrods, Tesco, the retailers of Bond Street, Corus, BP, Total, BT, Orange, O2, Thales, Global Crossing, Transco, British Energy, RWE npower and other electricity generators, various port operators, Vosper Thorneycroft, Smiths Aerospace, Somerset House, the National Trust, J.D. Wetherspoon and many others. He has also advised several major concerns (including the Mass Transit Railway Corporation) about rating and Government rent matters in Hong Kong.
  • In planning and compulsory purchase, he advised the London Development Agency on the preparation for and prosecution of the compulsory purchase order for the land required for the Olympic Games - and TfL in respect of the Greenwich Peninsula CPO. He advises numerous clients on a wide range of planning matters, from the nuclear industry (he advised BNFL on several matters relating to the decommissioning of a number of Magnox power stations), through conference centres to leisure, residential and retail. He also has advised a wide range of clients on compensation claims (here and in Hong Kong); his list of clients includes both acquiring authorities (such as the LDA, and Environment Agency Anglian Water and Bristol City Council) and claimants.
