PLANNING PERMISSION FOR LOW LEVEL RADIOACTIVE LANDFILL APPROVED BY SECRETARY OF STATE

Following the recommendations of the Inspector at a public local inquiry, the Secretary of State has granted Augean Plc planning permission of a landfill to dispose of low level radioactive waste in Northamptonshire.  The site in question currently allows hazardous waste landfill. In his decision the Secretary of State agreed with the Inspector (Mr. K G Smith) that the proposal would help to meet the aims of the 2007 Low Level Waste Policy, a benefit which greatly outweighed the small risk of actual harm from the development. The decision involves detailed consideration of Government policy on low level radiation waste and the nuclear decommissioning programme. The appeal decision also involves a detailed consideration of perceived harm to human health.

Augean Plc was successfully represented by Richard Phillips QC.
