NOTTINGHAM TRAM EXTENSION GETS GO AHEAD

On 30 March 2009 the Secretary of State for Transport decided to make the Nottingham Express Transit System Order (with modifications) to authorise construction and operation of Phase Two of NET, consisting of two extensions to Park and Ride sites at Clifton and Chilwell respectively, and directed that planning permission be granted. On the same day the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government granted listed building and conservation area consents, and gave the required exchange land certificate.

This followed a public local inquiry in November and December 2007, which was re-opened in October 2008.

Whilst the Secretary of State for Transport agreed that a compelling case had been demonstrated and that the scheme was reasonably capable of attracting the necessary funding, the decision was without prejudice to any subsequent decision whether to make funding available and whether to confirm the City Council's Workplace Parking Levy Scheme which is designed to fund the City Council's local contribution.

At the inquiries, Charles George QC represented the Promoters, Nottingham City and County Councils, instructed by Bircham Dyson Bell.
