REDEVELOPMENT OF NEWPORT CITY CENTRE GETS GO AHEAD
On 30 March 2007 the National Assembly for Wales confirmed (subject to agreed modifications) the Newport City Centre (Redevelopment of John Frost Square) Compulsory Purchase Order 2006, rejecting in particular the objection of Iceland Foods Limited that the scheme should be revised to retain one of their stores.
This is one of the largest recent city centre regeneration proposals, the CPO involving a 4.1 hectare site, to be redeveloped for retail, leisure, residential and hotel uses. The developer is Modus Corovest Newport Limited.
At the Public Inquiry in September 2006 the acquiring authority was represented by Charles George QC, instructed by Geldards of Cardiff.
